4.1 Cleaning the Prefilter

- Carefully remove the Eheim prefilter from the intake tube while it is still submerged in the aquarium to minimize mess.
- Press the grey button on the side of the prefilter to separate the two filter baskets.
- Remove the white filter sponges from each basket.
- Rinse the sponges thoroughly in a bucket of old aquarium water (water removed during a water change) to preserve beneficial bacteria. Avoid using tap water directly, as chlorine can harm beneficial bacteria.
- Clean the plastic filter baskets of any accumulated debris.
- Reinsert the clean sponges into their respective baskets.
- Reassemble the prefilter by aligning the two sections and pressing them together until they click securely.
- Reattach the prefilter to the intake tube in your aquarium.
- Restart your external filter.
4.2 Replacing Filter Media
While the sponges are designed for long-term use and can be rinsed repeatedly, they may eventually degrade or become too saturated with fine particles to clean effectively.
